Our Work
PLA University
Created to foster self-sufficiency and economic parity, PLA University is among the first career training institutions of its kind. It seeks to improve the outcomes of both PLA scholars and families. The program is free to PLA family and community members. It teaches life skills, job skills, and provides job certification training and placement. Available career pathways include: Information Technology, Health & Life Sciences, Advanced Manufacturing, Supply Chain Logistics and Entrepreneurship.

Student Support
With many of our children currently years below grade level, the Reading Advantage Program is one of the many key initiatives that will help our scholars realize their potential and be able to use education to change their futures. The goal of this program is to improve reading proficiency by at least 10 percent each year and ultimately beat the district and beat the state.
Summer Advantage
Summer Advantage is a nationally recognized summer learning program designed to help scholars close the achievement gap and prevent summer learning loss. Summer Advantage, not to be confused with summer school, offers rigorous, research-based academic instruction and a wide variety of hands-on enrichment classes to improve student achievement and continue to transform learning throughout the summer. Participants receive two healthy meals a day, daily recreation, and an exciting environment where they can flourish academically and build confidence as leaders.

Educator Support
The Principal in Residence (PiR) program prepares new and experienced school leaders to launch and lead Phalen Leadership Academies (PLA) across the nation. The program is designed to provide a pipeline of highly qualified candidates who are knowledgeable, trained, equipped and ready to implement the PLA model and lead PLA’s schools to success. PiRs will spend 6 - 18 months in residency with a high performing mentor principal learning how to launch and lead a new or existing PLA school.
The Sean Cowdrey Complex
The Cowdrey Complex will not only be a place for nurturing children and supporting families, but it will also strengthen our community, transform lives, and build character. Thanks to the NBA All-Star 2024 Host Committee, we've received a $50,000 Legacy Grant to fund this incredible facility. With a focus on leadership, health and wellness, teamwork, and self-awareness, this 17,585 sq. foot 'Falcons' Nest' gymnasium will provide a safe and nurturing environment for all.
